Packaging Box Production Process

Packaging boxes not only protect products but also enhance their decorative appeal. Let me walk you through the basic steps involved in creating a packaging box:

  1. Design: This is the first step, where a design is created based on the requirements, cultural elements, and product features. The design will include various patterns and details to make the packaging appealing.
  2. Prototyping: A sample is made according to the design. Packaging boxes, especially gift boxes, focus on beauty and aesthetic appeal. Often, multiple colors are used in printing. Besides the basic four colors (CMYK), there are also spot colors like gold and silver for added effect.
  3. Selecting the Paperboard: Typically, the paperboard for packaging boxes is made of rigid or long fiberboard. For wine or gift boxes, paperboards with a thickness of 3mm to 6mm are commonly used. The outer decorative layer is manually laminated onto the paperboard, which is then glued and formed.
  4. Printing: Printing is usually done only on the wrapping paper, not the laminated paper itself, which may simply be dyed. Since the box serves as outer packaging, high standards for the printing process are necessary. Issues such as color inconsistency, ink spots, or misaligned plates are strictly avoided to ensure aesthetic quality.
  5. Surface Treatment: After printing, the wrapping paper undergoes surface treatments like gloss lamination, matte lamination, UV coating, gloss varnish, or matte varnish to enhance its finish and durability.
  6. Die-Cutting and Lamination: Die-cutting (often referred to as “啤” in Chinese printing terminology) is an important step that must be done precisely using accurate cutting dies. Any inaccuracies in die-cutting can affect the subsequent steps. For gift boxes, lamination (gluing the wrapping paper to the box) typically comes after die-cutting, unlike other printed materials, to avoid damaging the wrapping paper. This process is often done manually to ensure the box’s final appearance is beautiful and consistent.

By following these steps, a high-quality packaging box can be produced that not only protects the product but also adds to its visual appeal.
